Optos / Nikon
Nikon Healthcare Business provides solutions (Life Science solutions/Eye Care Solutions/Contract Cell Development and Manufacturing) in the fields of biological science and medical. The core technologies common to these fields are optical and image processing/analyzing technologies. Nikon aims to support the health and well-being of as many people as possible in a society where people lead longer, healthier lives. In 2015, Nikon wholly acquired UK’s Optos plc., and has expanded its presence in the eyecare imaging field.
Optos is a global leading provider of eyecare solutions with an ultra-widefield retinal imaging device. Its core products produce high-resolution images of 82% or 200° of the retina, something no other imaging device is capable of in a single comfortable capture in less than ½ second.
The business was founded in 1992 by Douglas Anderson after his five-year old son lost his sight in one eye due to a retinal detachment despite regular eye examinations. Determined to enable eye problems to be detected as early as possible Douglas set out with the goal to make a patient-friendly device to capture an ultra-widefield image of the retina. Nowadays, the system can be found in many Ophthalmologist’s and Optometrist’s practices across the world, 22,000 devices installed globally – just in time for its 30th anniversary.
